Well, I seem to have, at some point, managed to make a second account by mistake. So, two mes! Yay??
Anyway, as I just pointed everyone from the tumblr exodus over to the other one, and I haven't posted in this one for years, (and just in case someone trying to find me typed this one in by mistake) please follow me at:

https://besina.dreamwidth.org/

Thanks!  And sorry for the oops!

Just upgraded my phone. Neat new interface for typing where you just drag your finger across the keypad. Very interesting and amazingly accurate.

Been away for a while as you can probably infer from my rather lengthy silence on here (even for me).

Back now and hoping to be typing away merrily again once I'm back to a normal keyboard. As novel as this is, I still prefer the click of keys beneath my fingers. Type at you all again soon!

Sweet!  And you thought they were all done with this phase (not really).

The story's really good:  New Planet Forming

Oh, and I just signed up for NaNoWriMo, which means I'm insane. Should be fun/enthralling challenging/exasperating  even though I don't expect I'll make the goal. At least it'll give me some number to shoot for.

As the protests spread and many, many, more people have seen the unprovoked police violence, it's finally spawned some discussion.

I started wondering if anyone had put together footage of the protests, random arrests and Buffalo Springfield yet.

The answer is "Of course they have!"  Because well, it's sad, but a lot of the commentary from the 1967 song carries over perfectly to today's dilemma.  At any rate, here is one of the better compilations I've found on the 'net, and yes, they arrested the Granny Peace Brigade -- what is this world coming to?:

Ooh a toughie!  Okay, not really.

The pit, if you happen to find yourself in it, is the worst.

If you're not in the pit, then who cares?

Dwayne's pretty much gotten one of his board games past the play-testing stage and it's pretty ready to market, so now I should probably jump in and get it the copyright stuff done for him and look into places that actually print the stuff up.  I know he's already looked into established game publishers, but at the moment most of their game design is done in-house and they aren't looking to buy from independents.  Time to tweak some of my game-designer friends for info on production and marketing.   Sadly, only a few on LJ, most of the others reside on Twitter, which is okay in small doses, but I really don't want to rely on.  So, designers, pipe on up -- we're looking specifically for a company that can create quality tile games, similar to Infinite City, but if you know of other resources (card games and the like) please feel free to list them too.  These are what I've looked at thus far on my own:

So far I've looked at SLP Packaging's website, which has been less than illuminating -- serving more as a point-of-presence rather than an informational outlet.  I've dropped them a request for more information, but I assume that will take a few days at the very least.

Paragon Packaging, whose web site was a lot more helpful and inspiring (just started the quote form on there). For the most part it looked good, except their little disclaimer about Order Tolerance. While I do believe it is an industry-wide standard, and hopefully they err on the plus side more than the minus, if I, like their example, order 5000 games, I damn well better get 5000, not 4500. They claim to help start-ups so they should know a 500 unit loss is a huge blow to a little company. Other than that little bit though, I'm fairly impressed with them so far.

Lastly, I visited MJS Creations, which, merely looking at the first page of their site, gave me the shivers.  I'm not sure I want to proceed any further.  If you've had experience with them, I would be very interested to hear what it was like.   [Zim & Dwayne, I think I know where they got that truckers game published *yeesh* *shudder*]

Ok, bit the bullet and looked a little deeper into the site, not a whole lot, but enough to glean this: 1) wow, they do a lot of religious games 2) they do have an area where you can click to see a larger graphic of the game, but they don't include really good detailed pictures of the separate components.   Some of the game listings include a short list of contents in the box, but it is not detailed, nor is it present on every listing. Not real impressed.

Edited to add:

Okay, wasn't ready to go to bed yet.  Now I've looked at The Game Crafter, and I'm pretty impressed by what I see there. Well, okay, they don't do tiles, yet, so there is a big drawback to our current project; but for a card game, it very well could be the way to go for a first run.  It has its limits as it is more of  a one-size-fits-all type deal, but it could possibly be made to work.

That's all I've managed for the nonce, feedback, suggestions, experiences and opinions of the above or any other entity you may know of are very, very welcome.

Darn it!  I've fallen victim to the cold that's making its way around our area.  Not entirely sure even who I picked it up from, as our kids have had a milder version of it for days, but nearly everyone else I know has come down with it as well.  I got the super-ultra-power-bug version of it.  After a day sleeping in bed, quite literally, I seem to be coming out of the worst of it.  Looks like the hubby powered his way thru it in about 3 hours.  I seriously hope this is the end of all the coughing and hacking up yucky stuff.  I still feel loopy and somewhat zombiefied, so I really hope this is the end of it, I don't think I'd deal well with another day like this.  Send healthy vibes please!

A gaming gem of an observation from [livejournal.com profile] lederhosen, which was too good not to repost here:

"Also: why is it always sewers? Why is it never "oh the only possible way to where you need to be is through M. Royale's House Of Boutique Cheeses And Tasteful Furnishings"? "

The electricity monster is definitely out to get us.  It's already zotted two computers and its latest victim seems to be our landline phone.

Time to unplug everything, methinks, throw out all the surge protectors, as they obviously are not doing their jobs, and buy all new really pricey ones.

I have no idea how this last one got zapped unless there's some sort of power weirdness going on with our main lines.  There haven't been storms in the last couple of days, so I'm confused, but there the phone sits, blinking sadly at us and proclaiming there is no power to the base, when it needs power from the base just to announce that sad fact.  The handset won't do anything except display that message now, and it won't play back any messages or let us dial out.  We've checked the connections about a zillion times and tried different sockets, and well, it's dead Jim.  I guess I should call the power company and see if there are similar complaints coming in and just avoid plugging anything in until this is cleared up.  We're running out of items for it to kill.

Needless to say, if you need to call us, use the cell phones.

No whining, fussing, worries, depression, or overcranked mania;  just a nice fun night hanging out, talking and playing a few games with friends.  Ahhhh.  Want more like it.

Kids costumes coming along slowly but surely.  Should have something to show by the end of the coming week.  :)

Found out for sure that laptop's only problem is a kaput battery, so yay! on that point (I am no longer computer-less as long as I remove the dead battery and plug in via the wall socket -- oddly won't work if the battery is still in there even when plugged in, but hey!  I'm not cut off!)   Will be finding out about the more complicated issues with the desktop possibly as soon as Wednesday, wish us luck!

The only thing I'm remotely worried about is that I found out that the nice neuropsychologist (who was supposed to test, evaluate and possibly diagnose this memory loss thing of mine) is actually NOT in our insurance network, which thoroughly sucks.  There aren't many of them, and only 2 in our area, whom it turns out neither of them accept our insurance, as good as it is.   Pbtttht.  So that essentially means I'm going to have to go on quite a search for someone ANYWHERE in the remotely local area who might be, or just give up and accept my fate as we're not made of money.  Kinda sucks, but I'm not going to let it get me down right now.  I've had too much fun lately to let this news spoil the moment.

It does however, make me an even firmer believer in socialized medicine and wondering when in hell this country will come to its senses (I was a staunch supporter before but this has galvanized it yet again).  The answer is "probably never" unless some nameless hero goes about abducting all the greedy and ill-informed republican masses and shipping them off to uncharted islands somewhere where they can all drive each other nuts.  I guess for the sanity of any possible children they might concieve, we should get them all fixed first.

/* Comes down off soapbox now */

So anyway, have a good night, all and sweet dreams and all that good stuff.

Later,

Meeeee

aka um.. that chick with that other name she doesn't use.
besina_sartor: back view of a girl in an old-fashioned dress walking thru an archway outdoors. Sepia tone. (why am I out of bed)
So these last few nights, I've been taking a proactive klonopin to help me sleep and it's been working wonders, at least in me not getting caught in thought ruts or panic attacks right before sleepy time.  Tonight I glitched it, which is why I'm still awake in the wee morning hours.

I am sooo looking forward to the weekend.  We've got some guests coming to hang out and play games, etc, with us, but I'm also part way started on the girls' Halloween costumes, and I really want to get those cranked out quickly so I don't feel rushed when we start getting closer to the date.  Plus I'd like some nice pics of them in the costumes before the actual trick-or-treating begins.

Our computers hate us.  The laptop magically healed itself when Dwayne brought it in to work and plugged it in, but he's still got it there to have it looked at, just in case. (Its problem was simply that the screen wouldn't come up, now it does.  Go figure.)  However now our desktop is giving me fits, I left it on for a few hours after my last online session and suddenly nothing I could do would bring up the display.  (sounding suspiciously familiar...) Ctrl-Alt-Del did nothing so I did a hard reboot.  Then it tells me it needs to do a scan (compatibility scan perhaps? Well something starting with a "C" blah blah scan anyhow) on our D: drive and comes up with a huge list of blocks of data that are unreadable, tells me to restart and try again and if I see the same warning to shut it down and go get some techie genius to throw money at.   Oookay.  Rebooted computer -- did the same scan thingy, found even more unreadable data blocks then it stalled, but never gave me the same warning screen.  Rebooted again in Safe Mode without Networking and tried again.  Lots of stuff apparently loading as it comes up line by line, but then we get stuck again and computer won't respond.  I shut off computer and bang head on something hard.  We really can't afford this right now.

I'm on my husband's work computer laptop right now, which means I'm cut off during the day -- a feeling which I hate even if I don't have anything to do on it, but this time around I actually was in the middle of a fairly good bit of story, that now I don't have access to, despite the fact that my brain has now decided to brim full of ideas.  Evil muses in league with computer demons.

End of griping.  Just had to share.

End of the first week of school for the kids.  They've enjoyed themselves, but have snarked a bit over lack of snack choices.   The school has outlawed so many different things, I'm afraid we don't have a wide variety to choose from, so I pretty much just had to tell Emma to suck it up and eat what we managed to pack for her.  She's getting hot lunches at school, per her request, so it's not all that redundant after all!

Dwayne and I, now having plowed thru the Enterprise series are tackling Arrested Development, a very funny series kind of like the Soap show was of the 80's but with much better and cohesive plot.  I know, it's been on for years, but we always hop on the boat when the show's almost over.  Did it for Lost (clicked into it in season 3), and Desperate Housewives (season 4 there, I think), managed it with the end of the Rave movement here in the States (which was very sad indeed), and of course now that I'm thinking Steampunk might be fun, it looks like although I'm not entirely alone in coming late to the party, I may have missed the most fun bits as it is now being overrun with the (even) weirder folks -- I'm sure soon they'll work out how to have fairy wings attached to their outfits, much like what happened to Ren Faires.  C'est la vie.

Oh my god, I had forgotten about this cartoon until [livejournal.com profile] reynardo just posted his latest on her blog!   I'd seen the first two shorts he made a couple years ago, but had no idea he'd continued -- his site now has quite a few of them posted.  Great if you're a cat owner!  Take a peek at http://www.simonscat.com.

A nice little essay for 40-something gamers:

http://mobile.salon.com/life/feature/2011/03/08/dungeons_and_dragons_comes_back

and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] theoldone for introducing me to the Scientific Computing website, which I can spend hours getting immersed in.

On a funny note, one has to admire some of the straight-forward language scientists are capable of employing (even as we're used to it being 50 cent, convoluted, or latin run-on words).  For example this wonderful sentence from an article they did on a "vast cloud of glowing gas" which produces its own light.

"A team of astronomers has used ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) to study an unusual object called a Lyman-alpha blob"

Yes, "blob" is an official designation and part of its name, and you can't get much more direct than by naming your Very Large Telescope, well, a Very Large Telescope.   *grin*

And last of all [livejournal.com profile] hellogoodtay had an interesting post about recession economics and alien invasions (also speaking to how things can be purposefully taken out of context and that FOX news viewers are idiots, but well, we already knew that last part.)  It's a long post so rather than cutting and pasting it, I'll just give ya the link:  http://the-recession.livejournal.com/826874.html

Nothing much to say today (well, not quite true, my choices are either not to say much or to write an essay, and I'm not feeling like taking that much trouble to post today, so nothing it is.)

So here's a little meme instead:
